Nonprofits Adjust
The economy is slowing and during these turbulent times nonprofits will continue to feel a pull back in charitable contributions and active involvement. These contributions of time and money represent major sources that allow these organizations to operate.
Check out this recent article here in the Boston Business Journal on how nonprofits are adjusting.
Find a cause and continue to support it through contributions, involvement and awareness.

Self Discipline
When it's cold and your on a long run only you can continue or stop. So I ask do you fight through the run or head back home to a cup of hot chocolate.
Integrity is what you do when no one is looking. Only you can hold yourself accountable…get out there and try new things and most important finish what you start

26.2 Miles v. 4,000 Miles
I thought it was impressive until I learned Kyle will be biking 4,000 miles cross country this summer... folks, that is inspirational.
Follow Kyle during his training and planning of this extraordinary feat here. I know I will find inspiration to keep running by following his progress.
I've known Kyle for many years and we've lost track along the way but I look forward to being there when he crosses into Boston to shake his hand and say WOW.
As an act of training he will no longer rely on a car.... that's forward thinking!!

Making History through Education
No matter what your politics we can appreciate that each child has the opportunity to grow up to become President of the United State of America.
The path to this opportunity starts with education. We can all contribute to this cause by promoting the importance of education to a child in our life.
This can best be achieved through the act of educating ourselves and leading my example. Take a course…go back to school…teach…read…help raise money to promote education. There is so many ways to support education in today's society.
In 2009, I am promoting education through running the Boston Marathon with Boston Partners in Education, reading 30 books and continuing to take courses towards my master’s degree at Bentley University.
Continue to learn and keep running!!

Failure
Maybe you need to set our goals higher!
I’m not advocating failure just suggesting that one should not let the idea of failure intrude on their ability to accomplish.
Try to make your wildest dreams come true and if you fail try again.

Motivated Friends!!!
Yes, you can change the world. Change begins by changing your world and the world around you. That means changing your attitude, your habits, your goals and most importantly helping inspire others to do the same.
How do you want to change the world around you??
I'm starting by running a marathon to promote childhood education here in Boston.
I have friends who are training for the Boston Marathon, cross country bike rides and triathlons.
You all inspire me to keep running!!

Lauren Mannarino
This is Lauren’s second marathon and she is very knowledgeable about conditioning. Just this past week she gave me a great lesson the IT Band and how to properly stretch this muscle. My left knee was bothering me and Lauren saved the day (thank you). Learn some stretches here.
Lauren is running with The Liver Foundation...check it out here.
The Liver Foundation & Boston Partners in Education have a couple of long training runs together so I look forward to running with Lauren in the coming weeks and of course on Marathon Monday.
Good luck Lauren and Keep Running!!

Board of Directors
When I first moved to Boston, at the age of 22, I interviewed for an opening on a nonprofit's board of directors. I remember walking into the Executive Directors office at 7am and her face was a little surprised to see such a young man so early in the morning trying to convince her I was the person to fill the spot.
As you can imagine she politely turned me down.
Check out this interesting website here to connect potential board members with local nonprofit organizations. A great way to find organizations in your area to support.
When you fail...try harder and find other ways to succeed and keep running!!

Emily Poltrack
Emily & I have known each other since about 5 or 6th grade and we have managed to stay in touch throughout the years.
Emily is a remarkable woman with a courageous story to tell and I am excited to say she is running the 2009 Boston Maraton®. We have not had the privilege to head out on a training session but in good time our feet will meet the road together.
Please check out her fundraising page here to learn more about her story.

Exciting Week!!!
I just had an excellent week. I reconnected with old friends, met new friends and even further developed friendships.
I’m finding training for the Boston Marathon has inspired me to see the world through new eyes. I’m training to run 26.2 continuous miles under 4 hours and it’s giving me energy to conquer even more and help others achieve. What are you trying to achieve? How can I help?
On Wednesday night I attended the 2009 Kick-Off Event for the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN). I wanted the chance to meet others working for and with nonprofits in and around Boston. Everyone I met had such passion for their career, their cause and life. It was an inspiring group of individuals and I highly recommend getting involved with a local or national nonprofit organization. Check out future YNPN events on Facebook here.
Look for volunteer opportunities here. Or maybe even consider starting your own nonprofit. I met one individual who is considering doing just that and it was an electrifying conversation.
Find a cause, support it, and keep running!!

Training During Busy Season
You must maintain a positive attitude to succeed and excuses are not allowed. Get out there and make your dreams come true and more importantly help others dreams come true too.
Tonight I ran a late and hard 3 miles in about 21 minutes. It felt good to open up the legs in a middle distant sprint.
This weekend I hope to add a few more video blogs. Check back on Sunday.
No excuses… Keep Running!

The Genius of Audacity
My first book is Never Eat Alone. It is an excellent book by Keith Ferrazzi, check out his blog here. I first read this book five years ago but it is definitely worth a second read as I wait for The Snowball to arrive.
I wanted to share the following quote referenced in Never Eat Alone
“Seize this very minute; what you can do, or dream you can, begin it; Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
Today is a good day to take bold steps towards your dreams.
Resting today!!

Donation Goals
I have a long way to go and need to work harder. My fundraising campaign will include blog posts, email blasts, letter campaign, cocktail party, and possibly a fundraising calendar.
I need your help!! Please email my blog and donation page to friends and family. Above all it is about raising awareness about mathematics, literacy and Boston Partners in Education but any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
Thanks for those who have donated so far!!! Together we can and will reach our fundraising goal.

Running Thoughts
1) Help others and be willing to ask for help
2) Runners are healthy so start running
3) Running is a series of small goals that accumulates to reach larger goals. Seems like a good way to approach life.
4) Running makes me feel alive. Descartes was famous for “I think, therefore I am” and I say “I run, I think while running therefore I am”. Okay a little dramatic but I was thinking this at about mile 10 today.
5) Why is my knee in pain? This was the last mile. I’ll be stretching and icing tonight!!
The most important thought of my run was about all of you. I want to know how I can help you reach your goals in 2009 and say thank you for supporting my marathon run.
Ask for help and keep running!!

Run to Think
Twelve miles in the last two days and tomorrow morning will be long run (I’m thinking 15 miles).
I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s run. I need a long run to think about what 2009 will bring. No specific new year’s resolution rather continuing to follow through on previous goals and redefining my approach.
Write down your goals!!! It will help you achieve them :).
Keep Reaching and Running!!

Passions Unite
On Wednesday morning I had the privilege to work with Stephen Henault to capture some training photos. Stephen was great to work with and has a real passion for photography.
Nothing is more inspiring then working with individuals who pursue their passions.
Big thanks to Stephen!!!
