Training Journal / Metrics

I tracked every jump shot I took the summer before college. Results = I developed a 3 pointer that allowed me to play college basketball

I tracked sit ups as a part of my college conditioning program. Results = I developed core strength and improved my speed and endurance

Now I track miles. My sister gave me marathon training journal for Christmas (thanks kid). Each week it offers a nutrition tip, running tip and motivational quote, I'll share in the weeks to come. The main focus is tracking my training progress. Results = I will finish the marathon under 4hrs

What you chart you will improve!!

Find what you want to improve personally, professionally or within your organization and develop key metrics to track performance and I guarantee you’ll find ways to improve.

Tomorrow look for ways to improve and Keep Running!!

New Shoes

Together we will conquer the Boston Marathon!!

Stop whatever you are doing and go get fitted for running shoes. Trust me!! Reading about the types of feet and shoes is not sufficient. After researching I thought I had the right type of sneakers…. I was wrong. I needed more support for my right foot and knee.

I purchased this pair and a second is being shipped.

Rotate your sneakers and keep running!!

Fastest 1 Mile

How fast can you run 1 mile?

I have not timed a 1 mile run since middle school or maybe high school. When I played college basketball we had to run 2 miles in 12 minutes and if you could not make it Day 1 you had to try every day during conditioning for 2 weeks... Good Luck!!

My fastest time was 11:11 or just over 5:35/mile. I'm pretty sure I can run faster now.

Check out this run in New Hampshire called the Millennium Mile

Gmaps Pedometer

Great website for mileage

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/

I just ran an energizing 13.75 miles through Boston & Brookline. I ran on the freedom trail, past the state house and fenway park, on the actual marathon course, up and down Beacon Hill and out past my old stomping grounds in Brighton and Brookline. My longest run to date and I ran it within my marathon pace... I can run faster :) and Alyssa is inspiring me to try and qualify, Alyssa Good luck at Disney!!!!

After about 4miles I settle into a nice stride and my thoughts become productive and stimulating and I love it!!!

Run for Reading!!

There are so many reasons why I am running the 2009 Boston Marathon. The most important is to help raise funds to support Boston Partners in Education. This organization promotes mathematics and literacy in Boston Public Schools.

I was a late blooming reader but now I have a strong passion for books and feel the more I read the more opportunities I can create for my clients, colleagues, family and myself.

Interesting article in the WSJ about a reading competition between Karl Rove & President Bush

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123025595706634689.html

I only read 15 books in 2008. My goal is to double this number, in 2009, to 30 books.

How many books did you read in 2008?

Keep running and reading!!

Diet

This weekend I learned how important nutrition and rest will play in my marathon training.

Last week as I mentioned was a busy week. I spent four nights out at networking, political and sporting events with clients, referrals sources and friends. As can be expected my food intake was not as healthy as my typical meals and I set a limit of 1-2 drinks per night. On Sunday it caught up to me and my run was not as strong.

Top performance requires the proper diet and rest.

Stay focused & Keep running!!!

Running Shoes

Busy week and running was limited. Good news is I’m done with classes for a few weeks and I aced my finals. Today I ran 7 miles on the treadmill, a little too slippery, in the Northeast, to risk running outside.

A tip of the week is shoes help to make an efficient runner. A year ago I almost gave up running because of knee pain that was growing worse. Thankfully, I learned about the importance of feet and the types of shoes runners wear.

Check out the link below for further information on the types of feet and shoes to match. My coach also recommends rotating shoes. I’ll be headed to Marathon Sports this weekend to pick up a couple fresh pairs for running shoes.

Running Efficiently

Here is the thing. It's busy season and I have to run...that means I run late at night. Tonight I made it a quick run (4miles) and an ab workout, core strength will make all the difference come heart break hill at mile 15.

Interesting training tip. My coach told me I need to take 180 steps in 60 seconds. So basically I counted one foot for 1 minute and tried to make it in 90 steps. This quite a change from my normal running techinque but I guess it's running efficiently.

Check out this article in menshealth about running efficiently. Click on link & Smarter Cardio

Boston Marathon - Official Training Begins!!

I have decided to blog my experiences as I train for the 2009 Boston Marathon® with Boston Partners in Education.

http://www.bostonpartners.org/

Today we had our first meeting to meet our coach, training team, the organization and discuss ways we can increase our fundraising efforts. I am so excited for the journey of self discovery I am about to embark and Boston Partners in Education is the perfect cause to support this journey.

There is many reasons why I am running this marathon and I will explore each of them in the days ahead. I look forward to your support as I train for this enduring exercise.

Please stay tuned!
